The Berrow Foundation Building at Lincoln College, Oxford: Sky-Frame

The Berrow Foundation Building at Lincoln College, Oxford, is a carefully crafted extension that enhances the historic college site while significantly improving student facilities. Situated within Oxford’s Central Conservation Area, this thoughtful addition respects Lincoln College’s 600-year-old heritage while introducing modern amenities.
Located next to the 17th-century College Chapel and the early 20th-century Rector’s Lodging, the project revitalises the 1905–06 Read & MacDonald building. The extension adds fully accessible facilities for events, performances, teaching, and dining, distributed across three levels. The design draws inspiration from the existing building’s geometry, offering a subtle contrast to its symmetrical façade while integrating seamlessly with the landscape.
Sky-Frame frameless floor-to-ceiling glazing invites the surrounding landscape into the building, creating a strong visual connection. On the upper level, flush corner glazing reflects close-up views of the Chapel and its stained glass windows by Abraham van Linge. Bespoke structurally glazed roof lights further illuminate the interiors, enhancing natural light throughout.
Pocket doors are used throughout the ground floor to maximise space flexibility while maintaining a streamlined aesthetic. The new basement level offers additional music practice facilities, while the ground floor includes a new Graduate Common Room and seminar space. On the first floor, a multi-functional area adjacent to the Oakeshott Room serves various academic and social purposes.
High-quality, understated materials were carefully selected to complement the historic context, with thoughtful detailing to conceal modern technology and ensure a cohesive aesthetic. The seamless integration of modern glazing systems and bespoke features enhances the building’s functionality while preserving its historic character.
